How to bring the holiday feeling home
What If Real Life Could Feel a Little More Like That?
If you’ve ever wondered how to bring the holiday feeling home after a truly magical trip – the kind that shifts something deep inside – then you’re in good company. Last time I wrote, I’d just come back from swimming with whale sharks and was still adjusting to the thud of everyday life re-entry.
This was our first real couple holiday in about 20 years – just the two of us, no kids, no school holiday chaos, no coordinating around everyone else’s needs.
It was glorious.
We drove 1255km up the coast to Coral Bay and Exmouth (13 hours door to door!) and for once… no caravan, no bickering in the back seat, no one asking “how much longer?”
We had music, audiobooks, snacks and time. I even napped while he drove. The open road felt like an exhale.
Then came the ocean magic:
- Whale sharks
- Manta rays
- Stargazing from a catamaran
- Screens which reverted to just being cameras
- No reception, no responsibilities
There were less-than-glamorous bits too:
Cold wind, tight wetsuits, saltwater snorkel mishaps and showering in a shoebox.
But even those moments reminded me how alive I felt doing something new.
Coming Home… and What Hit Me Harder Than Expected:
Home has its own simple delights:
🐾 Chez’s full-body tail wag
🛏 My own comfy bed
☕ A cup of tea in a proper mug
But the re-entry still felt heavy.
There it was again – decision fatigue, calendar-checking, mental load waiting like an inbox with no end.
That’s when it hit me:
This holiday didn’t just offer escape.
It offered insight.
Not just gratitude, but curiosity.
How could I bring that holiday feeling home?
The Takeaways (aka, My Clues for a More Intentional Life):
- More shared time and real presence
- Less decision-making, more simple structures
- More delight in the now
- Tiny weekly shifts that break routine in joyful ways
My friend Joanne put it beautifully:
“What I miss most is the feeling of space. Room to breathe.”
We talked about how easily that disappears without permission and boundaries to protect it.
And she’s right.
It’s not just about appreciating holidays – it’s about using them as mirrors.
Because the best holidays don’t just give us memories.
They offer clues about the kind of life we want to be living.
