Decision Fatigue in Everyday Life
The other day I caught myself saying, “I hate showers.”
Not the taking of them(I looooove a long, hot, powerful shower with good water pressure). It’s the scrubbing of glass, tiles and grout that I can’t stand. Give me a toilet to clean any day, but the shower? Absolute bane of my life. I’ll put it off forever.
We laughed, but it sparked a bigger conversation about how much of life is swallowed by these little chores we don’t want to do. The never-ending tasks that crowd out space for dreaming, for fun, for creativity.
Add to that the decision fatigue in everyday life – what to cook, what to wear, how to answer the email – and it’s no wonder we feel weary.
When the chores feel extra heavy
At this time of year, the drudgery feels especially sharp. Winter drags on in Perth, the days are cold and wet and the fatigue of the season is real. A friend told me the other day there are only 15 Saturdays until Christmas (WTF — how is that even possible??). No wonder we’re all feeling weary.
Maybe for you it’s not the shower. Maybe it’s the endless meal planning, the washing pile, the school lunches. That sense that life is being measured out in chores, not choices.
And yet, as much as the year feels like it’s slipping away, there’s another way to look at it…
Reframing the season
We still have four whole months left in the year. That’s a third of the year! Enough Saturdays, mornings, evenings and weekends to shift how life feels if we bring more of that holiday glow into them.
Imagine what the end of the year could look like if, instead of letting the to-do lists and chores rule, you added more energy, connection, or joy into the days ahead instead of just waiting for them to tick down.
Where the Glow started…
That’s when I realised – this is exactly why I created Bring the Glow Home.
It began with a holiday that gave me back a feeling of spaciousness, fun and possibility. It wasn’t just the adventure that filled me up. It was being reminded of how much more there is to soak in when the noise is dialled down.
On holiday, our brains get space to quieten. Our days fill with meaningful moments. That spark – the one that makes you feel alive – comes back.
We’ve all had those moments, big or small, where we felt excited, freer, more like ourselves.
Why everyday life feels so draining
The problem is, we rarely zoom out and notice what those moments are showing us. And if we don’t, the insights slip away under the weight of daily life and chores.
Researchers say the average person makes over 35,000 decisions a day. That’s why the switch back into everyday life feels so brutal. By the time dinner rolls around, no wonder we mutter “I don’t care, toast is fine.”
On holidays, so many of those decisions vanish. Our minds feel clearer. Our bodies are more at ease. Our energy is sharper.
That’s the glow. And it’s worth noticing.
I made this series not just for you, but for me too. Because I need the reminder as much as anyone. The glow is real, it’s worth noticing and it can be carried into everyday life.
