Letting go and embracing change 🍂

The changing season was definitely seen, and felt, during my 2 weeks in Greyton, a small country village 2 hours outside of Cape Town at the foothills of the Riviersonderend mountains.

It was an emotional visit as my Mum’s wonderful life enters its final chapter. It was a time for celebration, connection, sorting, inheriting, clearing and crying.

Mum was definitely a collector! She was also an incredibly creative woman and evidence of her talents filled the home she has loved for many years. This does mean though every surface and cupboard is full and some serious distributing was needed between 5 siblings, charities and the bin.

Last year I wrote about Autumn’s Important Lesson, which you can read here, of letting go of clutter – mental, physical and digital.  This year it certainly feels like a time of change, which comes whether we are ready for it or not!

Autumn is a perfect metaphor for the natural and inevitable changes that we all experience in life, especially during this midlife transition when we may feel the need to re-evaluate our values and purpose.

Just like the leaves on the trees change and eventually fall away, we too can embrace change as a natural and necessary part of life. We can let go of old beliefs, habits, and patterns that no longer serve us, and create space for new growth and opportunities.

The changing of the seasons can also remind us of the impermanence of things and the importance of living in the present moment. We can appreciate the beauty of each season as it comes and goes, and find joy in the small moments that make up our lives.

At this stage of our lives, we may also feel a sense of urgency to make the most of our remaining time, and autumn can serve as a reminder to prioritise what truly matters to us. We can reflect on our values and goals, and make intentional choices that align with our vision for the future.

Autumn as a time of change can help remind us to embrace the natural transitions in our lives, and approach them with openness and curiosity. By letting go of what no longer serves us and embracing new opportunities, we can create a fulfilling and purposeful life at any age.

Change is often not easy for us and is especially painful as we farewell parents and loved ones. Finding our way through the loss and grief takes time, but we can grow and evolve through it with love and kindness for ourselves and those around us.

Perhaps this autumn you can do your children a favour and let go of a few no longer needed items in your cupboards 😉
