6 Ways to nurture your inner glow this season

As the days darken, shorten, and turn colder here in the southern hemisphere, it’s natural to feel a shift in our energy levels. Just like the nature around us, we too can experience cycles of renewal and hibernation. This time of year can be a chance to curl up a bit, embrace cosy evenings, and enjoy some much-needed introspection.

Downtime and introspection are healthy, but we don’t want to get stuck in a downward spiral. Perhaps you’ve noticed yourself feeling less motivated, a bit less vibrant than your usual self. How can you use this time to nurture an inner glow that keeps you feeling lit up, purposeful, and connected.

Think of it like tending a fire on a cold winter’s night. You might start with a few embers, a little low on energy. But by adding the right kind of fuel – activities that spark joy and nourish your soul – you can build a warm, steady glow fueling you from the inside.

Signs You Might Be Stuck in a Seasonal Slump:

  • You constantly feel drained and unmotivated, like a hibernating bear who can’t quite shake off the sleepiness.
  • Your environment reflects a sense of overwhelm and disorganisation because when you’re less motivated, with low energy, tackling tasks feels too much.
  • You find yourself comparing yourself to others who seem to have it all together, leaving you feeling like you’re falling short. You may isolate yourself more and miss out on activities you normally enjoy.
  • Activities that used to bring you joy now feel like a chore, and it’s hard to find things that spark your interest.
  • Negative self-talk increases, making it harder to focus on the positive and find motivation for new goals.

So, how can you nurture that inner glow during these cooler months?

Embrace Cosy Comfort: Indulge in activities that bring a sense of warmth and contentment. Light some candles, turn on fairy lights, curl up with a good book, or savour a mug of soup or something a little more decadent. Put the throws and blankets to use and create a spot to enjoy the sunshine – when it appears!

Reconnect with Nature: Even on shorter days, spending time outdoors can be a powerful mood booster. Take a brisk walk in the crisp air, a walk in the rain can be enjoyed like a child would with wellies and puddle jumping. I love watching more sunrises – as a non-early bird I generally miss most summer sunrises 😉

Spark Joy: Dedicate some time each week to activities that ignite your passions or creative spark. Whether it’s painting, writing, music, or anything else that lights you up, allow yourself to explore and express yourself freely. Learning something new can be a great way to challenge yourself, ignite the spark and give you an energy boost.

Nurture Your Relationships: Connect with loved ones who bring you joy and support. Schedule phone calls or video chats with friends and family who live far away, or plan a cosy get-together with those close by. As we well know these connections don’t just happen, we have to actively dedicate time each week to connect with others who “get it and us.”

Practice Gratitude or Mindfulness: Taking a few minutes each day to reflect on things you’re grateful for. It could be big things like good health or supportive relationships, or smaller joys like a delicious cup of coffee or a beautiful sunset. Schedule a few short “mindful moments” throughout your week. Find a quiet spot, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Focus on your senses – what can you smell, hear, feel? Both of these simple practices can help you de-stress, become present in the moment, and appreciate the little things in life.
